A Quick Guide to Cappadocia
Cappadocia sits in central Turkey and is best known for its fairy chimneys, cave dwellings and the hot air balloons that fill the sky each morning. The landscape was formed by old volcanic ash that hardened into soft rock, which people then carved into homes, churches and even whole underground cities.
What to See
The Goreme Open-Air Museum is the usual starting point, with rock churches and old frescoes. Uchisar Castle gives the widest view over the region, while Avanos on the river is the place for pottery. The valleys around Goreme, such as Rose Valley and Love Valley, are made for walking and photos.
Getting There and When to Go
Most visitors fly into Kayseri or Nevsehir airport and transfer to Goreme or Urgup, about an hour away. Spring and autumn bring the most comfortable weather and the best chance of balloon flights. Summer is hot and busy, winter is cold but quiet and often very pretty with snow.

Staying in a cave hotel is part of the experience, with most options in Goreme, Uchisar and Urgup. A few days is enough to see the highlights at a relaxed pace.
