The Red Tour is the classic introduction to Cappadocia and takes in the best known sights north of Goreme. The main stop is the Goreme Open-Air Museum, a UNESCO site where a cluster of rock-cut churches still holds Byzantine frescoes. From there you climb to Uchisar Castle, the highest point in the region, for a panorama over the whole landscape. The afternoon visits Pasabag, the monks valley known for its mushroom-shaped fairy chimneys, and the strange rock forms of Devrent Valley, before a stop in Avanos where pottery has been made from the red clay of the Kizilirmak river for centuries. A local guide explains the history at each site and helps you make the most of the day.
