Photographing Cappadocia
Few places reward a camera like Cappadocia, where the rock shapes, valleys and morning balloons all sit close together. The light early and late in the day is soft and warm, which is when the region looks its best.
Where to Shoot
For sunrise and the balloons, head to a viewpoint above Goreme or to Love Valley. Uchisar Castle gives a wide panorama, Rose Valley glows near sunset, and the old streets of Urgup and Avanos are good for detail shots. A short walk off the main road often finds a quieter frame.
Tips
Arrive before first light to set up, since the balloons rise quickly once they start. A wide lens captures the valleys, while a longer one picks out single balloons against the sky. Phones do well here too, so the main thing is to be in the right spot at the right time.
