The Underground Cities
Beneath Cappadocia are dozens of underground cities, dug many levels deep into the soft rock. People used them for shelter in dangerous times, with room for families, animals, kitchens and even chapels, all linked by narrow tunnels.
Derinkuyu and Kaymakli
Derinkuyu is the deepest open to visitors and reaches down through several floors, with air shafts and large stone doors that could be rolled shut. Kaymakli is wider and easier to walk, which makes it a good choice for a first visit. Both are usually seen on the Green Tour.
Good to Know
The tunnels are low and tight in places, so they are not ideal if you dislike small spaces. Wear comfortable shoes, take a light jacket since it stays cool below ground, and follow your guide to keep the route clear in the busier sections.
