Avanos sits on the Kizilirmak, the longest river in Turkey, whose red clay has supplied potters here since Hittite times. In this hands-on session a local master shows you the basics at the wheel, then lets you try shaping a piece yourself. It takes a little practice to centre the clay and keep it even, and the result is yours to keep once it has dried and been fired. The workshop is a relaxed break from sightseeing and works well for families, with children able to join alongside an adult. Hotel transfer and all materials are included, and your hands and clothes will pick up some clay along the way.
